WHAT IS HYPNOSIS?         A better question is what is hypnosis not. It is not like you see on television. I cannot make you do anything you really do not want to do. You are not under my power, and I do not control you. Actually, you have more control over yourself then you did before. You are not unconscious or asleep. It is more like a daydreaming state. You are always thinking, you always hear me. You will be very relaxed. It is a very pleasant feeling. You can come out of it anytime, but usually you stay in it until we are done. You will not tell any secrets that you wanted to keep.

HOW CAN HYPNOSIS WORK?          Hypnosis works on the basis that you want it to work. For example I cannot force someone to quit smoking just as I cannot force someone to quack like a duck, if you want to quit smoking the hypnosis will help you. It does this by helping you control your desires, your senses and the part of your nervous system that you normally do not control (for example you can open up your airways). You will be able to see, hear, feel, smell, and taste the suggestions. Everybody has different abilities at these different senses. Some will get crystal clear images, most will get good images, and some will get fuzzy images, and it generally does not matter which you get. How does hypnosis effect your automatic or autonomic nervous system? I cannot really explain why it works, just that it does work, and it makes sense that it would work. Your mind controls your autonomic nervous system when you are under stress, for instance, it effects things such as ulcers,  nervous stomachs  and asthma. It only makes sense it can turn that into positive effects also.

WHAT CAN HYPNOSIS HELP WITH?             It can help with things such as asthma, irritable bowel syndrome (nervous stomach), as was described above. Hypnosis can help with pain management, by several mechanisms- by allowing relaxation of spasming muscles, by preventing your mind from recognizing you are in pain, and by stimulating your body's own narcotic- endorphins. Hypnosis can be used for all sorts of pain- chronic back pain, cancer pain, labor pain. Pregnancy is a special place where it can be used for pain relief during labor without suppressing the baby or the labor, and it can be used during the prenatal course for minor aches, heartburn and nausea. It is most commonly used for habit control, such as helping you to quit smoking or manage weight.  Is a wonderful form of stress management.

WHO CAN BE HYPNOTIZED?

Anybody  who wants to be hypnotized, can be hypnotized. All that is required is to relax and allow the suggestions to take place. Hypnosis can be used at any age ,from children up to senior citizens. Children are great hypnotic subjects, because they usually do not have the same fears that adults have ( ex quacking like ducks), plus they usually have great imaginations.

WHAT KIND OF SUCCESS CAN BE EXPECTED?

For habit control problems, because of the many variables involved  it is my worst success rate- HOWEVER, the success rate for smoking cessation is approximately 75%, the success rate for weight management is approximately 80-85%. The rest of the things I use hypnosis for is closer to 99%, such as pain management. This could be predicted because hypnosis works on the basis that you want it to work. Most people with pain want relief.

WHY DO I USE HYPNOSIS IN MY PRACTICE?

I am a board certified Family Physician, so the bulk of my practice involves taking care of medical problems of all ages, delivering babies, minor surgeries; etc. I use the hypnosis because I have found it to be a very powerful tool to help my patients more such as areas where conventional therapy is not enough. I learned hypnosis in 1986 through the Society of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis- which is one of the two largest hypnosis organizations.
